(Handelinge 6:8-15)

SY GESIG HET GESKITTER SO DIE VAN ‘N ENGEL:

8. Stefanus, ‘n man vol van God se genade en krag, het wonders en groot tekens onder die mense gedoen.

9. Op ‘n dag het ‘n aantal lede van die sogenaamde ‘Sinagoge van die Vrygelate Slawe,’ met hom in gesprek getree. Hulle was Jode wat van Sirene en Aleksandrië en van die provinsies Silisië en Asië gekom het.

10. Hulle was was egter nie opgewasse teen die wysheid en die Gees waarmee Stefanus gepraat het nie.

11. Toe het hulle mans omgekoop om oor Stefanus te jok en te sê: ‘Ons het hom beledigende dinge teen Moses, en selfs teen God hoor sê.’

12. Op hierdie manier het hulle dit reggekry om die skares en die familie-hoofde en die skrifkenners op te sweep. Hulle het Stefanus gearresteer, en ħom voor die Joodse Raad gebring.

13. Die valse getuies het gesê: ‘Hierdie man hou aan om afbrekend van die tempel, en van die Wet van Moses te praat.

14. ‘Ons het hom regtig hoor sê dat hierdie Jesus van Nasaret die tempel sal verwoes en die tradisies wat Moses vir ons gegee het, sal verander.’

15. Al die raadslede het stip na Stefanus gekyk, en gesien dat sy gesig soos dié van ‘n engel skitter.

HIS FACE WAS LIKE THE FACE OF AN ANGEL:

8. And Stephen, full of Grace and Power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.

9. Then some of those who belonged to the ‘Synagogue of the Freedmen, (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen.

10. But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

11. Then they secretly instigated men who said: ‘We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.’

12. And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him and brought him before the council,

13. and they set up false witnesses who said: ‘This man never ceases to speak words against this Holy place and the Law,

14. for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.’

15. And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

“GAAN NA DIE LAND WAT EK JOU SAL WYS.”

1. Die hoofpriester vra toe vir Stefanus: ‘Is hierdie aanklagte waar?’

2. Stefanus het geantwoord: “Medegelowiges luister na my! Ons Glorieryke God het in Mesopotamië aan ons voorvader Abraham verskyn voordat hy Haran toe is.

3. “God het vir hom gesê: ‘+Verlaat jou geboorteland en jou familie, en gaan na die land toe wat Ek vir jou sal wys.

4. “Abraham het toe die land van die Galdeërs verlaat en in Haran gaan woon. Ná sy pa se dood het God hom daarvandaan laat verhuis na hierdie land waar julle nou woon.

5. “God het hom geen eiendom as erfdeel hier gegee nie, selfs nie ‘n vierkante meter nie. God het egter belowe dat die hele land syne en sy nageslag s’n sal wees, al het hy toe nog geen kind gehad nie.

6. “God het egter ook gesê dat sy nageslag as uitlanders sal woon in ‘n vreemde land, waar hulle vir 400 jaar as slawe mishandel sal word.

7. ‘+Maar Ek sal hierdie nasie straf wat hulle as slawe laat werk,’+ het Hy gesê, ‘+en uieindelik sal hulle wegtrek en My op hierdie plek aanbid.’+

8. “God het in hierdie tyd vir Abraham die verbond gegee, waarvan die besnydenis die teken is. So het dit gekom dat Abraham sy seun Isak besny het, toe hy agt dae oud was. Issk het dieselfde gedoen met Jakob, en Jakob met die twaalf stamvaders

9. “Hierdie seuns van Jakob was jaloers op hulle broer Josef, en hulle het hom verkoop om ‘n slaaf in Egipte te wees. Maar God was by hom,

10. “en het hom uit al sy swaarkry gered. God het gemaak dat Farao, die koning van Egipte, van hom hou. God het ook besondere wysheid aan Josef gegee, sodat Farao hom as onderkoning oor Egipte, en as hoof van sy hele huishouding aangestel het.”

GO INTO THE LAND THAT I WILL SHOW YOU:

1. The high priest said: ‘Are these things so?’ And Stephen answered: “Brothers and fathers, hear me:

2. “The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

3. “and said to him: ‘+Go out from your land and from your kindred, and go into the land that I Will show you.’+

4. “Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there into this land in which you are now living.

5. “Yet He gave him no inheritance in it, not even foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.

6. “And God spoke to this effect – that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.

7. ‘+But I Will judge the nation that they serve’+, said God, ‘+and after that they shall come out and worship Me in this place.’+

8. “And He gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.

9. “And the patriarchs being jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him,

10. “and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, that made him ruler over Egypt, and over all his household.”

PÊREL VIR ELKE DAG:

(Handelinge 6:1-7)

DIE WOORD VAN GOD HET VERDER VERSPREI:

1. Namate die aantal gelowiges steeds toegeneem het, het daar klagtes gekom. Die Grieks-sprekendes het gekla oor die daaglikse verspreiding van kos aan hulle weduwees. Hulle het beweer dat die Aramees-sprekendes hulle afskeep.

2. Die twaalf roep toe al die gelowiges bymekaar en sê vir hulle: “Ons apostels behoort ons besig te hou met die verkondiging van die Woord van God, nie met die verspreiding van kos nie.

3. “Mede-gelowiges, kies sewe mans onder julle, wat daarvoor bekend is dat hulle vol van die Heilige Gees is, en wysheid het. Ons sal hulle dan vir hierdie bediening aanstel.

4. “Óns sal dan al ons tyd bestee aan gebed en die bediening van die Woord.”

5. Die voorstel het by almal byval gevind. En hulle het die volgende mans verkies: Stefanus, (‘n man vol van geloof en die Heilige Gees), Filippus, Progorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas en Nikolaus van Antiogië (wat voorheen ‘n Joodse proseliet was).

6. Hierdie sewe is aan die apostels voorgestel, en die apostels het vir hulle gebid, en die hande opgelê, om hulle vir hulle taak toe te rus.

7. Die Woord van God het verder versprei, en die aantal gelowiges in Jerusalem het geweldig toegeneem. Selfs ‘n aantal priesters het gelowig geword.

THE WORD OF GOD CONTINUED TO INCREASE:

1. In the days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews, because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

2. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said; “It is not right that we should give up preaching the Word of God to serve tables.

3. “Therefore brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.

4. “But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.”

5. And what they said pleased the whole gathering, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.

6. These they set before the apostles, and they prayed and laid hands on them.

7. And the Word of God continued to increase, and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem, and also great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

PÊREL VIR ELKE DAG:

(Handelinge 5:33-42)

“AS DIT VAN GOD KOM, SAL JULLE HULLE NIE KAN KEER NIE:”

33. Toe die Raad dit hoor, was hulle woedend en het hulle begin planne maak om die apostels dood te maak.

34. Maar een van die Raadslede het opgestaan. Hy was ‘n Fariseër met die naam Gamaliël, ‘n geëerde wetskenner van Moses, en baie gerespekteer deur al die mense. Hy het opgestaan en gevra dat die apostels ‘n rukkie moet uitgaan.

35. Hy het sy kollegas toe soos volg toegespreek: ‘Geagte Israeliete, wees versigtig wat julle met hierdie mans gaan doen.

36. ‘’n Tyd gelede het ene Teudas na vore getree en daarop aanspraak gemaak dat hy iets besonders is. Omtrent 400 man het by hom aangesluit. Hy is egter tereg gestel, en al sy volgelinge is verstrooi. Hierdie beweging het op niks uitgeloop nie.

37. ‘Nà hom, in die tyd van die sensus, was daar Judas die Galileër. Hy het ‘n opstand georganiseer, en ‘n klomp mense is agter hom aan. Ook hy is om die lewe gebring, en al sy volgelinge is uitmekaar gejaag.

38. ‘Wat die huidige geval betref, is my aanbeveling daarom aan julle: Laat staan hierdie mense en los hulle uit. As hulle beplanning en aksies mense-werk is, sal daar niks van kom nie.

39. ‘As dit egter van God kom, sal julle hulle nie kan keer nie. Netnou word daar bevind dat julle selfs teen God geveg het!’ Die Raad het sy advies aanvaar.

40. Hulle het die apostels ingeroep, en hulle laat slaan. Toe het hulle, hulle belet om weer in die Naam van Jesus te praat, en hulle laat gaan.

41. Die apostels het van die Raad af weggegaan, bly dat God hulle werd geag het om ter wille van die Naam van Jesus vernedering te ly.

42. En elke dag het hulle aangehou om mense in die tempel en van huis tot huis te onderrig, en die Goeie Nuus te preek, dat Jesus die Messias is.

“IF IT IS FROM GOD, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OVERTHROW THEM:”

33. When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.

34. But a Pharisee in the council, named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law held in honour by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while,

35. and he said to them: ‘Men of Israel, take care of what you are about to do with these men.

36. ‘For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were disperced and came to nothing.

37. ‘After him, Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the census and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished and all who followed him were scattered.

38. ‘So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or undertaking is of man, it will fail.

39. ‘But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!’ So they took his advice,

40. and when they had called in the apostles, they beat them, and charged them not to speak in the Name of Jesus, and let them go.

41. Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour for the Name of Jesus.

42. And every day, in the temple, and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching, that the Christ is Jesus.
