‘N ENGEL VERSKYN AAN HOM IN ‘N VLAM:

22. “Moses was opgelei in al die wysheid van die Egiptenaars, en hy het met woord en daad presteer.

23. “Op 40-jarige leeftyd het hy besluit om te gaan kyk hoe dit met sy mense, die volk Israel gaan.

24. “Tydens sy besoek het hy gesien hoe ‘n Egiptenaar een van die Israeliete aanrand, en hy het die slagoffer gaan help. Tydens sy vergelding het hy die Egiptenaar doodgemaak.

25. “Hy het gedink sy mense sou begryp dat God hom gestuur het om hulle te verlos, maar hulle het nie.

26. “Toe hy die volgende dag weer daar kom, kry hy twee Israeliete wat baklei. Hy het probeer vrede maak, en sê vir hulle: “Manne, julle is tog volksgenote! Hoekom maak julle mekaar seer?”

27. “Maar die een wat die oorsaak van die bakleiery was, stamp Moses eenkant toe en sê vir hom om hulle uit te los. ‘Wie het jou leier en regter gemaak?

28. “‘Wil jy my ook vermoor, soos jy gister die Egiptenaar vermoor het!’

29. “Toe Moses dit hoor, het hy gevlug, en as uitlander in die land Midian gaan woon. Daar het hy die pa geword van twee seuns.

30. “‘n Engel het veertig jaar later in die woestyn by Sinai-berg, in die vlam van ‘n brandende doringbos aan Moses verskyn. “

AN ANGEL APPEARED TO HIM IN A FLAME OF FIRE:

22. “Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

23. “When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.

24. “And seeing someone being wronged, he defended the oppressed man, and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.

25. “He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.

26. “And on the following day he appeared as two of the Israelites were quarreling, and tried to reconcile them, saying: “Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?”

27. “But the man who was wronging his neighbour thrust him aside, saying: ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

28. “‘Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’

29. “At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

30. “When forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.”

“ONS VOORVADERS SE KOS HET OPGERAAK:”

11. “Toe het daar hongersnood in Egipte en ook in Kanaän gekom. Ons voorouers het baie swaar gehad, want hulle kos het opgeraak.

12. “Toe Jakob hoor dat daar koring in Egipte is, het hy sy seuns gestuur om daarvan te gaan koop.

13. “Op hulle tweede besoek het Josef sy ware identiteit aan sy broers bekend gemaak, en hulle aan Farao voorgestel.

14. “Josef het sy pa Jakob, en sy hele familie laat haal, altesame 75 mense.

15. “So is Jakob Egipte toe. Later is hy daar dood, en ook al sy seuns.

16. “Hulle is na Sigem toe gebring, en begrawe in die grafgrot wat Abraham daar, met silwer geld by die seuns van Hemor gekoop het.

17. “Soos die tyd dat God Sy belofte aan Abraham sou vervul, nader gekom het, het ons volk in Egipte tot ‘n groot getal aangegroei.

18. “‘n Nuwe koning, wat niks van Josef geweet het nie, het egter in Egipte aan bewind gekom.

19. “Hierdie koning het ‘n slinkse plan teen ons mense beraam, en ons voorouers verplig om hulle babatjies buite aan hulle lot oor te laat, sodat hulle sou sterf.

20. “In hierdie tyd is Moses gebore, en hy was besonder mooi, en in die oë van God. Sy ouers het hom vir drie maande lank tuis versorg.

21. “Toe hulle hom uiteindelik buite aan sy lot moes oorlaat, het Farao se dogter hom gekry, en sy het hom as haar eie seun grootgemaak.”

“OUR FATHERS COULD FIND NO FOOD:”

11. “Now there came a famine throughout all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction, and our fathers could find no food.

12. “But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers on their first visit.

13. “And on the second visit, Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh.

14. “And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy five persons in all.

15. “And Jacob went down into Egypt, and lateron he died, he and our fathers,

16. “and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

17. “But as the time of the promise drew near, which God Had granted to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18. “until there arose over Egypt another king, who did not know Joseph.

19. “He dealt shrewdly with our race, and forced our fathers to expose their infants, so that they would not be kept alive.

20. “At this time Moses was born; and he was beautiful in God’s sight. And he was brought up for three months in his father’s house,

21. “and when he was exposed, Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him, and brought him up as her own son.”
