(Romans – introduction.)

Romans is the longest and most systematically reasoned of Paul’s letters. Paul announces its theme in (1:16-17): The Gospel is God’s Power for salvation, because it shows us that the righteousness of God is through faith for all who believe. Paul explains the need for justification through faith, because of sin. (1:16 – 4:25). He then spells out the results of justification by faith in terms of both present experience and future hope. (5:1-8:39)

In țhe next three chapters he expresses his sorrow that many of his fellow Israelites have not embraced the Gospel, and he wrestles with the theological implications of this. (Chs. 9-11). He concludes by describing how the Gospel should affect one’s everyday life. (Chs. 12-16)

Paul wrote this letter to Rome in about A.D. 57.

1. “Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the Gospel of God,

2. “which He promised beforehand through His Prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

3. “concerning His Son, Who was descended from David according to the flesh,

4. “and was declared to be the Son of God in Power, according to the Spirit of Holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,

5. “through Whom we have received Grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith, for the sake of His Name among all the nations,

6. “including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

7. “To all those in Rome, who are loved by God, and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

8. “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is proclaimed in all the world.

9. “For God is my Witness, Whom I serve with my spirit, in the Gospel of His Son, that without ceasing I mention you,

10. “always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s Will I may now at last succeed in coming to you.”

PAULUS HET ALMAL ONTVANG WAT HOM KOM BESOEK HET:

27. ‘+Hierdíe volk se verstand is afgestomp: hulle het hulle ore toegedruk en hulle oë toegemaak, sodat hulle nie met hulle oë kan sien, en met hule ore kan hoor, en met hulle verstand verstaan, en hulle bekeer, en Ek hulle gesond maak nie.’+

28. “Julle moet nou goed verstaan dat God se boodskap van redding na die heiden-nasies toe gestuur word.

29. “Hulle sal luister.”

30. Paulus het ‘n volle twee jaar lank in die huis gebly wat by gehuur het, en hy het almal ontvang wat hom kom besoek het.

31. Hy het die Koninkryk van God verkondig, en die mense alles oor die Here Jesus Christus geleer. Dit het hy gedoen met die grootste vrymoedigheid, en sonder enige verhindering.

(Acts 28:27-31)

PAUL WELCOMED ALL WHO CAME TO HIM:

27. ‘+For this people’s hearts have grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn, and I would heal them.’+

28. “Therefore let it be known to you that this Salvation of God Has been sent to the Gentiles;

29. “for they will listen.”

30. He lived there two whole years, at his own expense, and welcomed all who came to him,

31. proclaiming the Kingdom of God, and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ, with all boldness, and without hindrance.
