(Handelinge 27:27-36)

HY HET BROOD GENEEM EN GOD GEDANK:

27. Die veertiende nag dat ons so op die Adriatiese See rondgeslinger is, teen middernag, het die matrose vermoed dat ons naby land kom.

28. Hulle het ‘n dieplood uitgegooi, en ‘n diepte van ses-en-dertig meter gekry. ‘n Bietjie verder het hulle weer die dieplood uitgegooi, en toe was dit sewe-en-twintig meter.

29. Hulle was bang die skip loop op die rotse, en het toe vier ankers by die agterstewe van die skip uitgegooi, en gewens dit moet dag word.

30. Die matrose wou wegkom van die skip af, en het die bootjie in die see neergelaat, onder die voorwendsel dat hulle ankers by die boeg van die skip wou laat sak.

31. Paulus sê toe vir die offisier en sy soldate: “As hierdie matrose nie aan boord bly nie, kan julle nie gered word nie.”

32. Toe het die soldate die toue van die bootjie afgekap, en hom in die see laat val.

33. Net toe dit begin lig word, het Paulus almal aangespoor om te eet: “Vandag is dit al veertien dae dat julle in spanning wag, sonder om iets te eet.

34. “Daarom raai ek julle aan om nou te eet. Julle het dit nodig om gered te word. Niemand van julle sal ‘n haar van sy kop verloor nie.”

35. Nadat Paulus dit gesê het, het hy brood geneem, God in die teenwoordigheid van almal gedank, dit gebreek en begin eet.

36. Hulle het almal moed geskep en self ook begin eet.

(Acts 27: 27-36)

HE TOOK BREAD AND GAVE THANKS TO GOD:

27. When the fourteenth night had come, as we were being driven across the Adriatic Sea, about midnight the sailors suspected that they were nearing land.

28. So they took a sounding and found twenty fathoms. A little farther they took a sounding and found fifteen fathoms.

29. And fearing that we might run on the rocks, they let down four anchors from the stern and prayed for day to come.

30. And as the sailors were seeking to escape from the ship, and had lowered the ship’s boat into the sea, under pretence of laying out anchors from the bow,

31. Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers: “Unless these men stay in the ship, you cannot be saved.”

32. Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship’s boat, and let it go.

33. As day was about to dawn, Paul urged them all to take some food, saying: “Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued in suspense and without food, having taken nothing,

34. “Therefore I urge you to take some food. For it will give you strength, for not a hair is to perish from the head of any of you.”

35. And when he had said these things, he took bread, and giving thanks to God in the presence of all, he broke it and began to eat.

36. Then they all were encouraged and ate some food themselves.

ALL HOPE OF BEING SAVED WAS ABANDONED:

(Handelinge 27:19-26)

ALLE HOOP IS LAAT VAAR OM GERED TE WORD:

19. Die dag daarna het hulle eiehandig ook die skip se toerusting in die see gegooi.

20. Dae lank was die son en die sterre nie te sien nie. En het die geweldige wind voortgewoed. Uiteindelik het ons alle hoop laat vaar om gered te word.

21. Nadat hulle ‘n lang tyd nie meer geëet het nie, het Paulus tussen hulle gaan staan en gesê: “Manne, julle moes na my geluister het, en nie van Kreta af weggevaar het nie. Dan sou ons hierdie ramp en skade vrygespring het.

22. “Maar selfs in hierdie omstandighede, vra ek julle: Hou moed! Niemand van julle sal sy lewe verloor nie. Net die skip sal vergaan.

23. “Verlede nag het daar ‘n engel aan my verskyn van die God aan wie ek behoort, en wat ek dien.

24. “Die engel het gesê: ‘+Moenie bang wees nie Paulus, jy moet nog voor die keiser verskyn. En ter wille van jou spaar God in Sy goedheid die lewens van almal wat hier saam met jou op die skip is.’+

25. “Daarom, hou moed, manne! Ek vertrou op God dat alles net so sal gebeur, soos Hy vir my gesê het.

26. “Dit is so bestem dat ons êrens op ‘n eiland moet strand.”

ALL HOPE OF BEING SAVED WAS ABANDONED:

19. And on the third day they threw the ship’s tackle overboard with their own hands.

20. When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope of being saved, was at last abandoned.

21. Since they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood among them and said: “Men, you should have listened to me, and not have set sail from Crete, and incurred this injury and loss.

22. “Yet now I urge you to take heart, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship.

23. “For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to Whom I belong, and Whom I worship,

24. “and he said: ‘+Do not be afraid Paul; you must stand before Caesar. And behold, God Has granted you all those who sail with you.’+

25. “So take heart men, for I have faith in God, that it will be exactly as I have been told.

26. “But I Will let you run aground on some island.”

DIE ANKER IS GELIG EN ONS HET LANGS DIE KUS VAN KRETA GEVAAR:

11. Die Romeinse offisier het egter meer waarde geheg aan die mening van die kaptein en die eienaar van die skip, as aan wat Paulus gesê het.

12. Die hawe was nie geskik om daar te oorwinter nie, en die meeste wou liewer daarvandaan wegvaar, en probeer om Feniks te bereik. Feniks was ‘n hawe van Kreta wat Suidwes en Noordwes see toe, oop lê. Daar sou hulle kon oorwinter.

13. ‘n Ligte bries het uit die Suide begin waai, en die manne het gedink dat hulle, hulle plan sou kon uitvoer. Die anker is gelig, en hulle het so na as moontlik aan die kus van Kreta gevaar.

14. Maar dit was nie lank nie toe waai daar ‘n stormwind van die land af, die Noordoos, genoem die Eurakilon.

15. Die wind het die skip meegesleur. Omdat dit onmoontlik was om die skip se boeg wind op te hou, het ons dit opgegee, en wind af gedrywe.

16. Ons het ‘n bietjie beskutting gevind toe ons onderkant die eilandjie Kauda langs kom. Daar kon ons darem met moeite die bootjie van die skip in veiligheid bring.

17. Nadat die matrose die bootjie opgehaal het, het hulle as noodmaatreël ‘n paar toue styf om die skip vasgemaak. Omdat hulle bang was dat die skip op die sandbanke van Sirtis verpletter sou word, het hulle die dryfanker laat sak, en die skip sommerso laat drywe.

18. Omdat ons baie swaargekry het in die storm, het hulle die volgende dag die skip se vrag oorboord begin gooi.

(Acts 27:11-18)

THEY WEIGHED ANCHOR AND SAILED ALONG CRETE:

11. But the centurion paid more attention to the pilot and the owner of the ship, than to what Paul said.

12. And because the harbour was not suitable to spend the winter in, the majority decided to put out to sea from there, on the chance that somehow they could reach Phoenix, a harbor of Crete, facing both Southwest and Northwest, and spend the winter there.

13. When the South wind blew gently, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, they weighed anchor and sailed along Crete, close to the shore.

14. But soon a tempestuous wind, called the Northeaster, struck down from the land.

15. And when the ship was caught and could not face the wind, we gave way to it and were driven along.

16. Running under the lee of a small island called Cauda, we managed with difficulty to secure the ship’s boat.

17. After hoisting it up, they used supports to undergird the ship. Then, fearing that they would run aground on the Syrtis, they lowered the gear, and thus they were driven along.

18. Since we were violently storm-tossed, they began the next day to jettison the cargo.

(Handelinge 27:1-10)

JULIUS WAS TEGEMOETKOMEND TEENOOR PAULUS:

1. Toe ons vertrek na Italië toe bepaal was, het hulle Paulus en ‘n paar ander gevangenes aan Julius, ‘n offisier van die keiserlike regiment, oorhandig.

2. Ons het weggevaar aan boord van ‘n skip van Adramittium, wat by die hawens van die provinsie Asië sou aandoen. Saam met ons was Aristargus, ‘n Masedoniër van Tessalonika.

3. Ons het die volgende dag in Sidon aangekom. Julius was tegemoet-komend teenoor Paulus, en het hom toegelaat om sy vriende te besoek. Hulle het hom van die nodige voorsien.

4. Ons het daarvandaan weggevaar, en ons is aan die beskutte kant van Siprus verby, omdat die wind teen ons was.

5. Met Silisië en Pamfilië aan ons regterkant het ons die see oorgesteek en Mira in Lisië bereik.

6. Daar het die offisier ‘n Aleksandrynse skip gekry, wat na Italië toe sou vaar, en ons daarop laat oorgaan.

7. Ons het dae lank stadig gevaar en met moeite regoor Knidus gekom. Toe die wind ons nie toegelaat het om verder op dié koers voort te gaan nie, het ons aan die beskutte kant van Kreta by Salmone verby gevaar.

8. Ons het met moeite langs die kus opgevaar, en ‘n plek met die naam Mooi Hawens bereik, naby die stad Lasea.

9. Ons het baie tyd verloor, en dit het al gevaarlik geword vir skeepsvaart, want dit het al begin winter word. Paulus waarsku hulle toe:

10. “Manne, ek sien dat ons vaart van nou af gevaarlik sal wees, en dat daar nie net groot skade aan die vrag en die skip gaan kom nie, maar ook lewens-verlies.”

(Acts 27:1-10)

JULIUS TREATED PAUL KINDLY:

1. And when it was decided that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Paul and some other prisoners to a centurion of the Augustan Cohort, named Julius.

2. And embarking on a ship of Adramyttium, which was about to sail to the ports along the coast of Asia, we put to sea, accompanied by Aristargus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica.

3. The next day we put in at Sidon. And Julius treated Paul kindly, and gave him leave to go to his friends, and be cared for.

4. And putting out to sea from there, we sailed under the lee of Cypress, because the winds were against us.

5. And when we had sailed across the open sea, along the coast of Cilicia and Pymphylia, we came to Myra in Lycia.

6. Then the centurion found a ship of Alexandria, sailing for Italy, and put us on board.

7. We sailed slowly for a number of days, and arrived with difficulty off Cnidus, and as the wind did not allow us to go farther, we sailed under the lee of Crete, of Salmone.

8. Coasting along it with difficulty, we came to a place called Fair Havens, near which was the city of Lasea.

9. Since much time had passed, and the voyage was now dangerous, because even the Fast was already over, Paul advised them,

10. Saying: “Sirs, I perceive that the voyage will be with injury and much loss, not only of the cargo and the ship, but also of our lives.”
