‘N ENGEL VERSKYN AAN HOM IN ‘N VLAM:

“Moses was opgelei in al die wysheid van die Egiptenaars, en hy het met woord en daad presteer.
“Op 40-jarige leeftyd het hy besluit om te gaan kyk hoe dit met sy mense, die volk Israel gaan.
“Tydens sy besoek het hy gesien hoe ‘n Egiptenaar een van die Israeliete aanrand, en hy het die slagoffer gaan help. Tydens sy vergelding het hy die Egiptenaar doodgemaak.
“Hy het gedink sy mense sou begryp dat God hom gestuur het om hulle te verlos, maar hulle het nie.
“Toe hy die volgende dag weer daar kom, kry hy twee Israeliete wat baklei. Hy het probeer vrede maak, en sê vir hulle: “Manne, julle is tog volksgenote! Hoekom maak julle mekaar seer?”
“Maar die een wat die oorsaak van die bakleiery was, stamp Moses eenkant toe en sê vir hom om hulle uit te los. ‘Wie het jou leier en regter gemaak?
“‘Wil jy my ook vermoor, soos jy gister die Egiptenaar vermoor het!’
“Toe Moses dit hoor, het hy gevlug, en as uitlander in die land Midian gaan woon. Daar het hy die pa geword van twee seuns.
“‘n Engel het veertig jaar later in die woestyn by Sinai-berg, in die vlam van ‘n brandende doringbos aan Moses verskyn. “

“Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.
“When he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
“And seeing someone being wronged, he defended the oppressed man, and avenged him by striking down the Egyptian.
“He supposed that his brothers would understand that God was giving them salvation by his hand, but they did not understand.
“And on the following day he appeared as two of the Israelites were quarreling, and tried to reconcile them, saying: “Men, you are brothers. Why do you wrong each other?”
“But the man who was wronging his neighbour thrust him aside, saying: ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
“‘Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
“At this retort Moses fled, and became an exile in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
“When forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.”

DAAR HET HONGERSNOOD IN DIE HELE EGIPTE GEKOM:

“Toe het daar hongersnood in die hele Egipte en ook in Kanaän gekom. Ons voorouers het het baie swaar gehad, want hulle kos het opgeraak.
“Toe Jakob hoor dat daar in Egipte koring is, het hy sy seuns gestuur om daarvan te gaan koop.
“Op hulle tweede besoek het Josef sy ware identiteit aan sy broers bekend gemaak, en hulle aan Farao voorgestel.
“Josef het sy pa en sy hele familie laat haal, altesaam vyf-en-sewentig mense.
“So is Jakob Egipte toe. Hy is naderhand daar dood en ook sy seuns.
“Hulle is na Sigem toe gebring, en begrawe in die grafgrot wat Abraham daar met geld by die seuns van Hemor gekoop het.”

“And in the second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh.
“And Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his kindred, seventy five persons in all.
“And Jacob went down into Egypt, and eventually he died, he and our fathers,
“and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.”

“Hierdie seuns van Jakob was jaloers op hulle broer Josef, en hulle het hom verkoop om ‘n slaaf in Egipte te wees. Maar God was by hom en het hom uit al sy swaarkry gered. And Stephen said: “Brothers and fathers, hear me! The God of Glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
“and said to him: ‘Go out from your land and from your kindred and go into the land that I will show you.’
“Then he went out from the land of the Chaldeans and lived in Haran. And after his father died, God removed him from there, into the land in which you are now living.
“Yet He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot’s length, but promised to give it to him as a possession and to his offspring after him, though he had no child.
“And God spoke to this effect – that his offspring would be sojourners in a land belonging to others, who would enslave them and afflict them four hundred years.
“‘But I Will judge the nation that they serve,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and worship Me in this place.’
“And He gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the farher of Isaac, and circumcised him on the eighth day, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs.
“And the patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him,
“and rescued him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt, and over all his household.”

THEY SAW THAT HIS FACE WAS LIKE THE FACE OF AN ANGEL:

(Handelinge 5:8-15)

HULLE HET GESIEN DAT SY GESIG SOOS DIÉ VAN ‘N ENGEL LYK:

Stefanus, aan wie God baie genade en krag gegee het, het groot wonders en tekens onder die volk gedoen.
Party van die lede van die Sinagoge van die Vrygelate Slawe, soos dit genoem is, wat bestaan het uit Jode wat van Sirene en Aleksandrië afkomstig was, het toe met Jode wat van die provinsies Silisië en Asië gekom het, met Stefanus begin redeneer.
Hulle was egter nie opgewasse teen die wysheid wat hy van die Gees ontvang het en waarmee hy gepraat het nie.
Toe het hulle mense omgekoop om te sê: ‘Ons het hom teen Moses en God hoor laster.’
Hulle het die volk en die familiehoofde en die skrifgeleerdes opgesweep. Dié het op hom afgestorm, hom gegryp en voor die Joodse Raad gebring,
en vals getuies gekry om te sê: ‘Hierdie man wil nie ophou om dinge teen die heilige tempel en die Wet van Moses te sê nie.
‘Ons het hom hoor sê dat hierdie Jesus van Nasaret die tempel sal afbreek en die voorskrifte wat Moses vir ons gegee het, sal verander.’
Toe al die lede van die Raad stip na Stefanus sit en kyk, sien hulle dat sy gesig soos dié van ‘n Engel lyk.

THEY SAW THAT HIS FACE WAS LIKE THE FACE OF AN ANGEL:

And Stephen, full of grace and power, was doing great wonders and signs among the people.
Then some of those who belonged to the synagogue of the freedmen (as it was called), and of the Cyrenians, and of the Alexandrians, and of those from Cilicia and Asia, rose up and disputed with Stephen.
But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which Stephen was speaking.
Then they secretly instigated men who said: ‘We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.’
And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came upon him and seized him, and brought him before the council,
and they set up false witnesses who said: ‘This man never ceases to speak words against this holy place and the Law,
‘foř we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth Will destroy this place and Will change the customs that Moses delivered to us.’
And gazing at him, all who sat in the council saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

THEY CHOSE STEPHAN, FULL OF FAITH AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

PÊREL VIR ELKE DAG:

(Handelinge 5:41-42)

HULLE HET STEFANUS WAT VOL VAN GELOOF EN DIE HEILIG GEES WAS, GEKIES:

Díe apostels het van die Raad af weggegaan, bly dat hulle bevoorreg was om ter wille van die Naam van Jesus vernedering te ly.
En hulle het nie opgehou om die mense elke dag in die tempel en in hulle huise te leer en die evangelie te verkondig, dat Jesus die Christus is nie.

(Handelinge 6:1-7)

In daardie tyd toe die gelowiges nog steeds meer geword het, het daar teen die Hebreeus sprekendes klagtes gekom van die Griekssprekendes dat hulle weduwees in die daaglikse versorging afgeskeep word.
Die twaalf apostels roep toe al die gelowiges bymekaar en sê vir hulle: “Dit is nie reg dat ons die verkondiging van die Woord van God verwaarloos om die versorging te kan behartig nie.
“Nou broers, soek sewe mans onder julle uit wat daarvoor bekend is dat hulle vol van díe Heilige Gees is, en wysheid het. Sodat ons hulle vir hierdie taak kan aanstel.
“Ons sal dan al ons aandag aan gebed en die bediening van die Woord bly gee.”
Die voorstel het by al die gelowiges byval gevind, en hulle het vir Stefanus gekies, ‘n man met ‘n vaste geloof en vol van die Heilige Gees. En verder, Filippus, Progorus, Nikanor, Timon, Parmanas, en Nikolaus wat van Antiogië afkomstig was, en vantevore uit die heidendom tot Jodedom oorgegaan het.
Die gelowiges het hulle voor die apostels gebring, en hulle het vir die voorgesteldes gebid, en vir hulle hande opgelê.
Die Woord van God het verder versprei, en die getal gelowiges in Jerusalem het geweldig țoegeneem. Selfs ‘n groot aantal priesters het gelowig geword.

THEY CHOSE STEPHEN, A MAN FULL OF FAITH AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT:

Then they left the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour for the Name of Jesus.
And every day, in the temple, and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus.

(Acrs 6:1-7)

In these days, when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution
So the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said: “It is not right that we should give up preaching the Word of God to serve tables.
“Therefore brothers , pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty.
“But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word.”
What they said, pleased the whole gathering. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.
These they set before the apostles. And they prayed and laid hands on them.
And the Word of God continued to increase and the number of the disciples multiplied greatly in Jerusalem. And a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.

“IF IT IS FROM GOD, YOU WON’T BE ABLE TO STOP THEM:”

(Handelinge 5:33-40)

“AS DIT VAN GOD KOM, SAL JULLE HULLE NIE KAN STOP NIE:”

Toe die Raad dit hoor, was hulle woedend, en hulle wou díe apostels doodmaak.
Een van die Fariseërs in die Raad, ‘n man met die naam Gamaliël, wat as leermeester van die Wet van Moses by díe volk in hoë aansien was, het toe opgestaan en gevra dat die apostels vir ‘n tydjie buitentoe gevat moes word.
Daarna sě hy vir die Raad: “Israeliete, julle moet versigtig wees wat julle met hierdie mense gaan doen.
“‘n Tyd gelede was daar die geval van Teudas wat in opstand gekom het, en daarop aanspraak gemaak het dat hy iemand van betekenis is. Hy het ‘n aanhang gekry van omtrent vier honderd man. Hy is doodgemaak en al sy volgelinge is verstrooi. En die opstand het tot niks uitgeloop nie.
“Daarna was dit Judas die Galileër, wat in die tyd van die volkstelling in opstand gekom het, met ‘n deel van die volk agter hom aan. Ook hy is om die lewe gebring en al sy volgelinge is uitmekaar gejaag.
“Wat die huidige geval betref, my raad aan julle is, laat staan hierdie mense en laat hulle los, want as hulle wil en doen, mensewerk is, sal daar niks van kom nie.
“Maar as dit van God kom, sal julle hulle nie kan keer nie. Moenie dat dit dalk later blyk dat julle selfs teen God gestry het nie!” Die Raad het na hom geluister.
Hulle het die apostels ingeroep, hulle laat slaan en hulle belet om weer in die Naam van Jesus te praat. Daarna het hulle, hulle losgelaat.

(Acts 5:33-40)

“IF IT IS FROM GOD, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THEM:”

When they heard this they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
But a Pharisee in the Council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, held in honour by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.
And he said to them: “Men of Israel, take care what you are about to do with these men.
“For before these days Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men – about four hundred, joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him, were dispersed and came to nothing.
“After him Judas the Galilean rose up in the days of the Census, and drew away some of the people after him. He too perished and all who followed him, scattered.
“So in the present case I tell you , keep away from these men and let them alone. For if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail.
“But if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” So they took his advice.
And when they had called in the apostles they beat them and charged them not to speak in the Name of Jesus, and let them go.

AN ANGEL OF THE LORD OPENED THE PRISON DOORS:

(Handelinge 5:17-32)

‘N ENGEL VAN DIE HERE HET DIE TRONKDEURE OOPGEMAAK:

Die hoëpriester en al sy ondersteuners, wat aan die party van die Sadduseërs behoort het, is met afguns vervul en het besluit om in te gryp.
Hulle het die apostels oop en bloot laat vang, en in die tronk laat stop.
Maar ‘n Engel van die Here het in die nag die tronkdeure oopgemaak, die apostels uitgelei en vir hulle gesê:
“Gaan staan in die tempel en leer die volk die boodskap van hierdie Nuwe Lewe.”
Hulle het gehoor gegee en die môre vroeg na die tempel toe gegaan, en die mense geleer. Intussen het die hoëpriester en sy ondersteuners, die leiers van Israel, vir ‘n volle vergadering van die Joodse Raad, bymekaar geroep. En toe wagte na die tronk toe gestuur om die apostels te gaan haal.
Maar toe die wagte daar kom, het hulle, hulle nie in die tronk gekry nie. Hulle het teruggekom en vertel:
‘Ons het die tronk behoorlik toegesluit gevind en die bewaarders op hulle pos voor die deure, maar toe ons oopmaak, en ingaan, was daar niemand nie.’
Toe die bevelvoerder van die tempelwag en die priesterhoofde dit hoor, was hulle uit die veld geslaan, en hulle het gewonder wat van die apostels geword het.
Net toe kom daar iemand en sê: ‘Weet julle, die mans wat julle in die tronk gesit het, staan daar in die tempel en leer die mense.’
Toe het die bevelvoerder en die wagte die apostels gaan haal, maar sonder geweld, omdat hulle bang was die volk steek hulle onder die klippe.
Hulle het die apostels voor die Raad gebring, en die hoëpriester sê toe vir hulle:
‘Het ons julle nie uitdruklik belet om die mense in hierdie Naam te leer nie? En nou lê díe hele Jerusalem vol van julle leer! Boonop wil julle ons ook nog verantwoordelik hou vir hierdie Man se dood!’
Petrus en die ander apostels het geantwoord: “‘n Mens moet eerder aan God gehoorsaam wees, as aan mense.
“Die God van ons voorvaders het Jesus uit die dood opgewek, nadat julle Hom vermoor het, deur Hom aan díe kruis op te hang.
“God het Hom verhoog tot Leidsman en Verlosser, aan Sy regterhand, sodat Hy Israel tot bekering kan bring, en hulle sondes kan vergewe.
“En ons is getuies daarvan, en die Heilige Gees wat deur God gegee is aan diegene wat Hom gehoorsaam is.”

AN ANGEL OF THE LORD OPENED THE PRISON DOORS:

But the high priest rose up, and all who were with him (that is the party of the Sadducees). And filled with jealousy,
they arrested the apostles and put them in public prison.
But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said:
‘Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.
And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. When the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council, all the senate of the people of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
But when the officers came, they did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported;
“We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.”
When the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were greatly perplexed about them, wondering what this would come to.
And someone came to tell them: ‘Look, the men whom you put in prison, are standing in the temple and teaching the people.’
Then the captain and the officers went and brought them, but not by force, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest questioned them,
saying: ‘We strictly charged you not to teach in this Name, yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this Man’s blood upon us.’
But Peter and the apostles answered: “We must obey God rather than men.
“The God of our fathers raised Jesus, Whom you killed by hanging Him on a tree.
“God exalted Him at His right hand, as Leader and Saviour, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
“And we are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, Whom God Has given to those who obey Him.”

HULLE IS ALMAL GESOND GEMAAK:

Deur die apostels het daar baie tekens en wonders onder die volk plaasgevind. En al die gelowiges het gereeld saamgekom in die Pilaargang van Salomo.
Van die ander mense het niemand dit gewaag om by hulle aan te sluit nie, al het die volk hulle hoog geag.
Baie mense wat in die Here geglo het, mans sowel as vrouens, het algaande by hulle getal gevoeg.
Die mense het selfs siekes op straat uitgedra en hulle daar op draagbare en beddens neergesit sodat, as Petrus daar verbygaan, al is dit maar net sy skaduwee, op party van hulle sal val.
Daar het ook baie mense van die dorpe in die omgewing van Jerusalem af gekom, en siekes gebring en mense wat onder onrein geeste gely het. Hulle is almal gesond gemaak.

THEY WERE ALL HEALED:

Many signs and wonders were regularly done among the people, by the hands of the apostles. And they were all regularly together in Solomon’s Portico.
None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high esteem.
And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
so that they even carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mats, that as Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
The people also gathered from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
